Reflections from Our TMS Book Club Discussion of The Body Keeps the Score

By Isabelle Charlot

Last month, I had the opportunity to host a TMS Book Club lunch session with Jessica Fraser to discuss The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.

The book explores the lasting impact trauma can have on both the mind and the body. While it is not specifically about mast cell disease, many of its themes resonated with experiences shared within our community.

Through discussion questions, participants reflected on the relationship between trauma and chronic illness, as well as their impact on overall well-being. Hearing members share their own experiences living with mast cell disease brought many of the book’s themes to life. Although each person’s experience was unique, participants reflected on the challenges of living with chronic illness and navigating medical uncertainty. Many also discussed how these experiences can influence emotional and physical well-being over time.

What stood out most to me was the openness of the discussion. Hearing community members share their perspectives reminded me of the value of creating spaces where people can connect through shared experiences. Opportunities like this are an important part of what TMS strives to provide for our community.

At the end of the session, participants voted on our next book club selection, and we are excited to continue the conversation with Immune: A Journey Into the Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive by Philipp Dettmer. Through engaging illustrations and accessible science, the book explores the remarkable complexity of the immune system and the many ways it works to protect us every day. We look forward to gathering again to learn together and discuss how these topics connect to our own experiences.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for TMS Book Club. I am grateful for the openness and willingness of participants to share their experiences and contribute to such a supportive community discussion. The registration link for our next book club can be found below, and we hope to see you there!
