TMS Attends the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM) Meeting

By Shonna Snyder, Ph.D.

When I learned that I would be attending the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM) meeting, my first reaction was a mix of excitement and nervousness — after all, I had never been to Europe before! Thankfully, Jessica, our Executive Director, had full confidence in me. She reassured me that I would do well and represent The Mast Cell Disease Society (TMS) proudly.

Upon arriving in London, I was quickly introduced to a phrase that locals use often: “Mind the gap.” It’s a safety reminder in the transportation system, cautioning passengers to watch the space between the train and the platform. The phrase resonated deeply with me, as it mirrors an important truth about our TMS community — we, too, must constantly be mindful of the “gaps” that can impact our physical, emotional, and environmental well-being. Just as travelers stay alert to avoid danger, MCD patients must stay vigilant to minimize triggers and manage symptoms safely.

The ECNM conference itself was as dynamic as it was informative. The agenda was organized into themed sessions, where leading clinician-researchers presented their latest findings on a shared topic for about an hour. After each session, attendees took a short break before diving into the next theme. This structure created an energizing and efficient learning environment — allowing me and my fellow attendees to absorb cutting-edge research across a wide range of topics in just a few days. The very last session of the entire conference was a patient session.  Several MCD specialists stayed late to present information for patients. This was very informative and provided updates as well as advice for patients living with MCDs.

Beyond the sessions, I had the opportunity to connect with many incredible people. I met with our partners from Blueprint Medicines and Cogent Biosciences, as well as leaders from other mast cell disease organizations across Europe. These interactions not only strengthened professional relationships but also fostered new friendships and collaborations that will help advance our shared mission of improving the lives of those affected by mast cell diseases on both “sides of the pond.”

Overall, attending the ECNM meeting was an inspiring and invaluable experience — one that deepened my understanding of global research efforts and reinforced the importance of TMS’s role within the international mast cell community.
