Writes Children's Book

New children’s book illustrates what it is like to live with Mastocytosis. The character of Winny Ninny speaks to children in a voice that they can understand in helping them to cope with health challenges.

Mastocytosis is rare disease characterized by the presence of too many mast cells in various organs and tissues. The condition can be a chronic, long-term illness or it can develop suddenly. Mastocytosis may be systemic, involving a variety of organs, or cutaneous, involving only the skin, also referred to as urticaria pigmentosa. Pediatric mastocytosis may involve the bone marrow and the gastrointestinal tract, and symptoms in children can vary greatly from child to child. In 90% of the cases the typical presentation involves cutaneous manifestations (skin lesions).*

In the story, a young girl named Winny Ninny Poo Poo is teased about her spots. Winny encounters many challenges in her pursuit to discover why she is speckled. Eventually Winny learns that she has Mastocytosis. Through her journey and her diagnostic discovery, Winny imparts some valuable life lessons to all readers.

This book is for all children, but would appeal to ages 4 to 12 the best. Beautiful, full color illustrations, 8 1/2 x 11, saddle stitched, 24 pages. These books can be purchased from The Mastocytosis Society as well as from Sette Publishing (contact Sette Publishing for details on wholesale orders. Note: prices from Sette will be reflected in Canadian currency).

The author, Lisa Sterling lives with her husband and six boys in Boise, Idaho. For the past several years, Lisa has struggled with illness. After two years of not understanding why she was ill, Lisa discovered she had a Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which is another Mast Cell Disorder like Mastocytosis.

With the desire to assist children and adults suffering from mast cell disorders, Lisa wrote The story of Winny Ninny Poo Poo. Lisa hopes this story gives a fun but serious peek into everyday life with chronic illness.

Geri Herd, illustrator   Lisa was assisted in illustrating the book by another Mastocytosis patient, Geri Herd. Geri helped to create the character and appearance of Winny. Geri lives in Australia and enjoys illustrating children’s stories.
